Zájem o epidemiologické údaje u chronické bronchitidy a u chronické obstrukční plicní nemoci (CHOPN) je způsoben vysokou prevalencí v řadě zemí, stoupající mortalitou a vysokými finančními náklady na tato onemocnění. Prevalence chronické bronchitidy je v ČR 15 % (u mužů 2-3x větší než u žen). Prevalence CHOPN je u nás zhruba poloviční, v severní Americe a severní Evropě 4-6 %. Mortalita na CHOPN v USA stoupá a je na čtvrtém místě příčin úmrtnosti. V ČR se pohybovala mortalita na CHOPN v letech 1994-1998 v rozmezí 10,3-14,2 / 100 000 obyvatel. Výdaje na péči o nemocné s CHOPN jsou obrovské. Přesnější informace v ČR nejsou k dispozici. Obecně v Evropě platí, že 5-10 % těch, kteří mají nejtěžší stupně nemoci, znamená 2/3-3/4 ze všech finančních nákladů na CHOPN.
