Léčba DM 2. typu je především léčbou nefarmakologickou, jejíž úspěšnost je nejen v rukou lékaře (řádné poučení a edukace nemocného), ale především v rukou samotných nemocných (vůle, motivace a schopnost i ochota léčebný diabetický režim dodržovat). Farmakologická léčba má být zahájena tehdy, když dodržování nefarmakologických zásad nestačí k docílení trvale uspokojivé kompenzace diabetu.
