Jaterní cirhóza je vleklé závažné onemocnění, kterého přibývá. Ročně na ně umírá v ČR asi 2000 nemocných. Etiologicky převažuje alkoholismus a chronické virové hepatitidy, hlavně B a C. Nebezpečná dekompenzace se projeví buď metabolickým rozvratem s ikterem, hemoragickou diatézou a retencí tekutin nebo rozvojem portální hypertenze. Ta má řadu nepříznivých důsledků, především vznik kolaterálního oběhu s rizikem krvácení z jícnových varixů, splenomegalií s hypersplenismem či portosystémovou encefalopatií. Život nemocného výrazně zhoršuje retence tekutin s rozvojem ascitu. Zákeřným, často terminálním stadiem, je jaterní selhání, které je i dnes obvykle letální. Stejně tak je obávanou komplikací rozvoj karcinomu v cirhóze, neboť jeho výskyt prudce stoupá.
