Anxiolytika jsou léky užívané k léčbě úzkosti. Úzkost není choroba, nýbrž příznak. Proto užití anxiolytik bývá tam, kde je známa specifičtější či kauzálnější léčba, sporné. Specifičtější léčbou úzkostných stavů spojených například s fobiemi je kognitivně behaviorální psychoterapie. K farmakologickému zvládání panických stavů a obsedantně-kompulzivní poruchy jsou vhodnější specifické inhibitory zpětného příjmu serotoninu do centrálních synaptických zakončení (SSRI; přehled v tomto časopise viz (1) nebo klomipramin. Ke mírnění úzkosti a nespavosti v rámci depresivní poruchy (1) jsou lékem volby antidepresiva. Úzkost u psychotických nemocných se zvládá především neuroleptiky.
