Mezi záněty štítné žlázy řadíme tři odlišná onemocnění: akutní zánět, vznikající jako septické metastatické ložisko ve štítné žláze, subakutní (de Quervainovu) tyreoiditis virové etiologie, a chronický zánět, jehož etiologie je autoimunní. Chronická tyreoiditis je nejrozšířenější, postihuje převážně ženy, a jejím důsledkem bývá nejčastěji snížení funkce tyreoidey. Včasná diagnóza onemocnění je důležitá pro prevenci závažných důsledků funkční poruchy. Je zvýšené riziko vzniku lymfomu tyreoidey v terénu neléčeného chronického zánětu ve štítné žláze.
