Autoři podávají přehled léčby osteoartrózy (OA) se zaměřením na léčbu váhonosných kloubů. Zdůrazňují nutnost individuálního přístupu a aktivní role pacienta v terapeutickém plánu. Doporučují zahajovat léčbu vždy postupy nefarmakologickými (režimová opatření + fyzikální léčba) a teprve potom přistoupit k postupům farmakologickým a posléze se oba postupy kombinují. Farmakoterapie se zpravidla zahajuje analgetiky a nesteroidní antirevmatika (NSA) se používají až při jejich nedostatečné účinnosti a při příležitosti zánětu. Významným zlepšením je aplikace COX-2 preferenčních a COX-2 specifických léků. V případě netolerance NSA nebo jejich nedostatečné účinnosti lze použít tramadol.Dále autoři hodnotí význam jednotlivých léků ze skupiny SYSADOA. S glukosaminsulfátem byly provedeny 2 studie, které ukázaly na možný strukturu modifikující efekt. Stručně jsou zhodnoceny jednotlivé chirurgické metody. V závěru jsou určitá doporučení algoritmu postupů.
