V přehledu je uvedeno postavení obezity v tzv. Reavenově metabolickém syndromu X. Je uveden vývoj názorů na komplex nálezů patřících k metabolickému syndromu. Je uveden přehled léčebných postupů používaných u obézních s metabolickým syndromem včetně užití nových léků - orlistatu a sibutraminu. Dále jsou uvedeny léčebné postupy užívané u obézních diabetiků. V závěru je uvedeno v přehledu, jak může pacient profitovat z redukce hmotnosti.
