Epidemiologické a klinické studie opakovaně prokázaly, že pacienti s diabetes mellitus mají 2-4× vyšší riziko rozvoje aterosklerózy než lidé bez diabetu.

Dyslipidemia in Diabetes - What is novel in current recommendations?

Epidemiologic and clinical studies have repeatedly showed that patients with diabetes are 2-4 fold risk of developing atherosclerosis than people without diabetes. In diabetic patients, atherosclerosis affects both males and females with the same effect - high risk of atherosclerosis is therefore particularly striking in diabetic women. Common risk factors for accelerated atherosclerosis (smoking, hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemia) have the same impact in diabetic patients as in persons without diabetes, but the very high risk of atherosclerosis could not be explained solely by them.
