Antibiotics during Pregnancy

The exposition to a potential teratogen is one of major concerns for any physician caring for pregnant women. In the presenting article some basic recommendations are given regarding the classification of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents into various categories according to their already verified safety and contraindication profile for pregnant women. The principal decision of whether the antibiotics are necessary presents a very important aspect for their use in pregnancy. In general, antibiotics should only be administered during pregnancy with excessive caution and the avoidance of the unwarranted use of safe antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins is considered here.
