Mám větší pocit spokojenosti sám se sebou, mám-li dvě povolání, než kdybych měl jen jediné. Medicína je má zákonitá manželka a literatura je moje milenka. Když mi jde jedna na nervy, strávím noc s druhou. Je v tom možná trochu zmatek, ale žádná z obou činností nestrádá mou duplicitou zájmů. (Anton Pavlovič Čechov)

Lékaři měli vždy blízko ke kultuře a zvláště k literatuře. Někteří z nich nejen jako pasivní konzumenti, ale jako aktivní tvůrci, spisovatelé. To platí v literaturách všech národů. Zejména v Čechách, kde tato tradice vznikla již za tzv. národního obrození v 19. století, kdy se mnozí lékaři podíleli na buditelském úsilí.

Ve 20. století bylo mezi českými lékaři mnoho spisovatelů a někteří - hlavně v meziválečném období - patřili k předním představitelům české literatury.
