NON-ANTIBIOTIC SUBSTANCES IN THERAPY OF RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS

A variety of compounds which are employed in the managment of pathological conditions of a non-infectious origin have laso been shown to modify cell permeability and to exibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial ctivity. In this category may be included phenothiazines, local anaesthetics, proton pump inhibitors, diuretics and mucolytic drugs. Erdosteine is a recently introduced mucoactive drug. It modulates mucous production and viscosity and also exibits activity against free radicals. It has been observed that, although devoid of antibacterial activity, erdosteine is capable of interfering with bacterial adhesiveness.
