Chřipkovitá onemocnění, často označovaná -nemoci z nachlazení- podle anglického -common cold-, mohou mít některé z příznaků, které připomínají chřipku. Ale chřipka je závažné infekční onemocnění, které se explozivně šíří a během 4-6 týdnů mezi prosincem a březnem postihne 10-40 % obyvatel.

Charakteristickými příznaky chřipky je náhlý začátek s vysokou horečkou, dráždivý kašel, únavnost, bolesti svalů i kloubů, delší rekonvalescence, možné komplikace zvláště u starších osob. Patří mezi preventabilní nemoci a lze jí předcházet každoročním očkováním, ev. i kauzálně léčit virostatiky.
