Plicní rakovina způsobuje ve světě více jak 1 milion úmrtí ročně. Přes dobře známý vztah mezi kouřením a plicní rakovinou počet nových případů neustále stoupá, zvláště mezi ženami. Během posledních 20 let bylo věnováno značné úsilí snížit úmrtnost na tuto chorobu. Léčba rakoviny plic využívá postupů chirurgických, radioterapie, kombinované chemoterapie, kombinovaných přístupů chemoterapie a současné radioterapie a nově i biologické léčby. Přesto výsledky v dlouhodobém přežití jsou velmi skromné. Jen malá část pacientů přežívá více jak jeden rok po stanovení diagnózy a méně než 15 procent přežívá 5 let (1).
