Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects about 6–10% of the global population and is a cause of substantial morbidity, mortality and cost of society. Although much has been written about COPD as a disease, less is known about how patients experience their bad illness. Physicians should be aware of these feelings and take care not to exacerbate the patients´ distress by assuming that little can be done help. Because the hopeless associated with COPD is no longer apppropriate. There are effective interventions, and much be done to improve patients´ health status and emotional status. It is important, however, that both patients and physicians approach the disease with a positive attitude.
