Reactive forms of oxygen and other free radicals are formed in a human body in the course of biochemical processes continuously. Highly reactive forms of oxygen play an important role in antimicrobial protection of human organisms supporting killing of microorganisms during fagocytosis. Oxidative stress caused by free radicals takes part in protein, lipids and nucleic acid degradation. Oxidative stress is responsible for acceleration of atherosclerosis, degenerative diseases, carcinogenesis. Sufficient level of antioxidants in biological tissues plays a protective role.

Keywords: Key words: reactive forms of oxygen, antioxidants, vitamins atherosclerosis.
