Mumps - epidemic continues in the eastern part of the Czech Republic

Mumps is an acute viral illness with fever, pain swelling of one or more salivary glands, especially parotid glands, less frequent manifestations include meningitis and orchitis in adolescents and men. Universal vaccination against mumps was started in the Czech Republic in 1987 year. Only sporadic cases and small local epidemics were observed in the period of 1997–2004 year. Epidemic spread of mumps started in the eastern part of the Czech Republic in 2005 year, till this time approximately 7 000 cases were observed. Most of cases are in the age group of 10–24 years; patients younger than 20 years were vaccinated against mumps in childhood.
