Some infections caused by Chlamydiae have been known for a long time, e.g. trachoma, lymphogranuloma venereum and ornitosis, but they can be encountered neither in the Czech Republic nor in other developed countries or only rarely. On the other hand it has been shown over last ten years, that infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis serovars D-K are the most frequent sexually transmitted urogenital infection. Chlamydophila pneumoniae has been known only for slightly more than 10 years, but it was found that with increasing age it asymptomatically colonizes the general population and cause community acquired pneumonia in probably more than 10% of cases. Laboratory confirmation of clinical suspicion of Chlamydial infection is not always easy, but overestimation of one positive serological result leads often to an unnecessary antibiotic treatment.
