Home parenteral nutrition

Patients dependent on long-term parenteral nutrition are very often admitted on metabolic units, from different, mainly surgical departments. It happens in situations when we are not able to secure adequate input of nutrition by enteral way – short bowel syndromes and chronic disorders of bowel function. Admission of parenteral nutrition is then only one reason for stay in hospital and this dependency on hospital bed practically leads to their invalidity. Ideal solution for these patients is arrangement of parenteral nutrition at home conditions which results in comeback to normal life. These patients are monitored in specialized nutrition ambulances hereafter careful education and training during short stay in hospital.
