Venous thromboembolism is a relatively common disease especially with elderly and high risk patients such as those with cancer, immobilized
due to injury or carriers of thrombophilic gene mutations. The incidence is 0.8 to 2 in 1000 patients/year. In our review we
analyzed the incidence of pulmonary embolism, risk factors, hemodynamic severity, treatment strategy and its efficacy with patients
hospitalizated for acute pulmonary embolism in a district hospital. We analyzed the data of a group of 657 in-patients, who were admitted
to the Department of Internal Medicine in Frýdek-Místek Hospital for pulmonary embolism in the period between January 2000 and
December 2006.
