In the article, basic characteristics of mycoses and etiological agents’ specification are presented, with emphasis on infections frequently
occurring in medical practice. Proper sampling is crucial for determination or verification of clinically suspected fungal infections.
Guidelines for the collection of clinical specimen for mycological examination are described in detail. Further, an overview and brief
characterization of diagnostic methods currently used in mycology laboratories are given and their limits in terms of speed and reliability
are specified. Finally, a recent overview of registered antifungal drugs including their forms of administration is also presented and the
current status of antifungal susceptibility testing is briefly evaluated.
