More than 20 millons of EU inhabitants suffer from undernutrition. 30–40 % patients admitted to hospitals are undernourished. Malnutrition
is frequently their main reason for hospitalisation and in 2/3 of patients it gets worse during the hospital stay. Undernutrition is
caused by starvation. The term starvation is often not understood correctly as insufficient food or nutrition intake. There are multiple
reasons for hospital starvation including a professional blindness that leads to focusing on technologies and sophisticated methods
more than on simple follow up the food intake and checking patients body weight. A complex treatment includes also nutritional care
using different kinds of artificial nutrition that can currently prevent starvation in hospitals.
