Diabetic macular edema is the most important complication of both types of diabetes mellitus and the most common cause of visual
impairment in patients affected by diabetes mellitus. A diabetic macular edema is defined as a retinal thickening caused by accumulation
of fluid and/or hard exudates involving or approaching the center of the macula. Risk factors for the occurrence and progression
of diabetic macular edema are duration of diabetes, hyperglycemia and systematic hypertension and severity of diabetic retinopathy.
In the review article pathogenesis, clinical definition, diagnosis and therapy of the diabetic macular edema are described.
