The Health Organization probiotics definition is live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. This review addresses the concept of intestinal microflora and their function and evidence regarding the possible uses of probiotics in gastroenterology (diarrhoe, idiopatic bowel diseases, Helicobacter pylori infection, acute pancreatitis a prevention of colorectal cancer) and hepatology (hepatic encephalopathy, effect on bacterial intestinal translocation and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis).

The basis of pharmacotherapy of osteoporosis is to reduce the fracture risk. Adequate treatment of osteoporosis should be undertaken on the basis of the etiology of osteoporosis, on the mechanism of drug action and on its safety. The spectrum of drug used in the treatment is constantly growing, offering new forms of drug delivery in a different application scheme. The emphasis is to minimize the adverse events of the treatment and increase patients compliance due to the need for long-term treatment.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers represent a collection of illnesses caused by several distinct viral families. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of these viruses cause life-threatening diseases. In general; the term „viral hemorrhagic fever“ describes a severe multisystem syndrome. Typical for this syndrome is a systemic damage of vascular system often accompanied by hemorrhages. Nevertheless the bleeding itself is rarely life-threatening.

Elevated arterial blood pressure is a frequent reason for seeking emergency care. The severity of hypertensive crises is determined by the presence of target organ damage rather than the level of blood pressure. A hypertensive emergency is characterized by clear signs of acute injury to a target organ. These situations require the immediate but not abrupt reduction of arterial pressures by means of parenteral administration of drugs. Hypertensive urgencies are characterized with no signs of organ dysfunction. A large number of drugs are available for managing hypertension.

The following announcement presents two female patients over 65 years old with chronic viral hepatitis C, genotype 1 infection, who were successfully treated. Despite high age, comorbidities and adverse effects of the treatment that was carried out in the shortened regime/pegylated interferon alfa 2a or 2b and ribavirin/, and patients achieved sustained virological response. (PEG-IFN), ribavirin, sustained virological response (SVR), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), ribonucleic acid (RNA).

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is an acute life-threatening illness most commonly precipitated by stafyloccal toxic shock toxin. Two forms are recognized: menstrual and non menstrual TSS. The paper deals with ethiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation and therapy of TSS folllowed by a case report of the menstrual form.

The article deals with an analysis of sodium content in extruded soups and Asian-type soups today commonly used for fast food as well as products for easy flavouring of foods. The results are presented as sodium content in one portion relative to the recommended daily dose of sodium – NPDDWHO.

The article informs about Victoza (liraglutid) which is a glucagon-like-peptid-1 analogue (GLP1). It is used to treat patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 with insufficient compensation of diabetes during metformin and/or derivates of sulfonylurey or metformin and thiazolidindion therapy. Liraglutid stimulates the insulin secretion depending upon the concentration of glucose in blood and reduces an incorrectly high secretion of glucagon. Liraglutid also reduces body weight and the amount of body fat thanks to the suppression of the feeling of hunger and reduction of energy intake.
