MUDr.Martin Hutyra, Ph.D., MUDr.Eva Kociánová

Interní Med. 2011; 13(2): 78-81

Elevated arterial blood pressure is a frequent reason for seeking emergency care. The severity of hypertensive crises is determined by the presence of target organ damage rather than the level of blood pressure. A hypertensive emergency is characterized by clear signs of acute injury to a target organ. These situations require the immediate but not abrupt reduction of arterial pressures by means of parenteral administration of drugs. Hypertensive urgencies are characterized with no signs of organ dysfunction. A large number of drugs are available for managing hypertension.
