Colorectal cancer - diagnosis and therapy

Colorectal cancer is a serious health problem in our republic. Compared with the worldwide situation, we belong to countries with the highest incidence of these tumours and mortality from them. Moreover, no efficient screening takes place in our country, therefore despite certain improvements the treatment outcomes have not been still good. The article reviews diagnostic and therapeutic options in tumours of the colon and rectum. The importance of prevention and population awareness of risk factors and first symptoms of the disease and necessity of timely medical examination are pointed out. Multidisciplinary team collaboration of specialists – medical oncologist, surgeon, radiotherapeutist, radiodiagnostics, pathologist and psychologist – is crucial.
