Although radiofrequency catheter ablations has evolved increasingly and represent an effective causal modality of treatment of supraventricular tachycardias, antiarrhythmic drugs still remain a basis for acute and chronic pharmacological treatment. In everyday clinical practise it is usefull to classify antiarrhythmics according to their properties as 1/ AV node blocking agents, slowing the conduction through the AV node, and 2/ stabilizing agents that effectively stabilize electrical events in the artria, accessory pathways and in the ventricles. A new classification of tachyarrhythmias into four groups according to their regularity, frequency, and...

Toxoplasmosis is a very frequent parasitic infection which in immunocompetent persons causes an asymptomatic lifelong infection; serious disease can be caused only under special conditions like vertical transmission from mother to child during pregnancy or reactivation of latent infection in persons with immunodeficiency.

Warfarin is a member of a class of vitamin K antagonists and acts as an inhibitor of epoxide reductase and vitamin K reductase, two essential enzymes in vitamin K cycle. It is a racemic mixture of enantiomers which have different pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Due to its metabolism warfarin is susceptible to many drug interactions on different bases. Clinically most important interactions are those due to inhibition of its hepatic metabolism. Awareness of the interactions between warfarin and other medications may help to avoid the risk of excessive or inadequate anticoagulation.

The treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia and dyslipidemia with statins is at present considered to be the method of choice in the primary and mainly in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In our study we compared the efficiency and tolerance of „original“ atorvastatin SORTIS® by Pfizer with „semi-generic“ atorvastatin TULIP® Lek. Randomised, multicentric, double blind and double dummy study was performed with the administration of 20 mg once a day for forthcoming 56 days. From the total number of 90 patienty originally included 71 were finally evaluated. It was shown that both abovementioned drugs...

The review about epidemiology, structural changes in glomeruli, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapeutic possibilities in nephrotic syndrome is given. Increased glomerular permeability of the glomerular capillary wall for macromolecules caused by the changes of the structure of the glomerular basement membrane, or podocytes and slit diaphragm between foot processes of podocytes is the main cause of nephrotic syndrome. Recently new information about podocyte proteins (nephrin, podocin, α-actinin 4) and their functions emerged. A deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of hereditary and immunologically based nephrotic syndrome is warranted...

Physical activity is an integral part in the management of both diabetes type 1 and type 2. Within the context of diabetes type 2 it is generally accepted today that the worldwide epidemic of the disease is related to decreased physical activity as well as ever increasing prevalence of obesity. Thas, physical activity becomes a fundamental component not only in the management but also prevention of diabetes type 2. Although physical activity exerts added effects on the body, it also has its pitfalls – certain risks which the patient should be aware of and instructed about. The goal should be to ensure the prevalence of benefits over the risks,...

Excessive daytime sleepiness occurs in about 5% of the population. It is provoked by primary hypersomnias, of which narcolepsy is the most important, and also by diseases involving disturbed nocturnal sleep (obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movements in sleep), some other neurological affections (Parkinson´s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer´s disease and encephalitis) and by diseases with reduced nocturnal sleep duration (insomnia, shiftwork intolerance and sleep insufficiency). A historical and recent overview of symptomatic therapy of excessive daytime sleepiness. Two drugs are currently used in the CR –...

Carcinoma of prostate nowadays represents a serious medical problem. It belongs among the most frequent malignant diseases in men above the age of 50. Despite the progress in diagnosis, radical and palliative treatment, the mortality preserved steady level as it was some 30–40 years ago. Despite epidemic rise of numbers, there are marked variations in incidence worldwide. The highest figures of incidence, exceeding 100 per 100 000 men, were in 1997–1998 in the USA and Australia, the lowest was found in Japan, China and some other countries of Southeast Asia. Slovakia ranks with its incidence among countries with moderate to lower...
