Osteoporosis is a serious disease of civilized society, leading to fractures whose complications can lead to death. While we have abundant literature related to the effects of drugs on bone metabolism, literature dealing with nutrition and trace elements on bone metabolism is unique. More and more attention is paid to the requirements for adequate nutrition throughout life and its relation to osteoporosis. The proper nutrition with sufficient amount of protein is extremely important for normal bone metabolism. The cumulative effects of nutrition is particularly important in determinig peak of bone mass and further maintaining bone mass throughout the...

Colorectal carcinoma is among the most common tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. A major advance in the treatment of advanced disease has been the introduction of targeted therapy in the clinical practice. The combination of chemotherapy and biological therapy has exhibited an additive effect reflected in an increase in therapeutic response, a prolonged median survival, and increased secondary operability of an initially inoperable condition, while favourably affecting the quality of life of patients under treatment.

Blood was associated with medicine since ever. Bleeding still belongs between the most frequent causes of death even in developed countries. Precise and timely diagnosis of the cause of the bleeding together with its efficient treatment is necessary, especially in cases where the bleeding is life-threatening. This text aims to review critically evidence available on the aetiology, pathogenesis and the treatment of such bleeding. Based on this evidence, general recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of life threatening bleeding are suggested.

The paper presents the diagnostic options in identifying patients at high cardiovascular risk. It deals with the significance of both classic and new risk factors. The author discusses the options of nonpharmacological as well as pharmacological treatment aimed at reducing the established high risk. Current principles of intervention with hypolipidemic drugs, antihypertensives, and antiplatelet drugs are dealt with in detail.

Compressive therapy is of essential importance for both the treatment and prevention of lower extremity venous disease. It may involve the use of compressive bandages, compressive stockings, or intermittent pneumatic compression. It is commonly indicated based on tradition or empirics, randomized clinical studies are lacking. The paper aims to provide a brief overview of indications of compressive therapy in the prevention and treatment of lower extremity venous disease.

Cushing‘s syndrome occurs as a result of autonomous overproduction of glucocorticoids. Primary Cushing‘s syndrome is caused by glucocorticoid overproduction by an adenoma, carcinoma, or adrenal hyperplasia. ACTH secretion is suppressed. In the case of secondary Cushing‘s syndrome, there is primary ACTH overproduction in the hypothalamic-pituitary region or ectopically. The level of ACTH is normal or high. Ectopic overproduction is less common, the sources most typically include small-cell lung carcinoma and thymoma, less frequently carcinoids and other malignancies. The incidence of carcinoids ranges from 0.7 to 2.1 per 100,000 people....

The author deals with the basic principles of chronic wound care based on the concept of wound management. Management and care of chronic wounds primarily requires the determination of cause and identification of factors which could delay healing. Another prerequisite of successful healing is a proper debridement, management of infection, and inhibition of inflammation. Management of chronic wounds also involves managing the exudate and swelling as well as establishing an optimal moist environment in which cellular and biochemical procedures of the healing process can occur. Another therapeutic step is the promotion of epithelization. It is emphasized...

In elderly people a physiologically adequate nutrition is essential for both the maintaining health and supporting quality of life. As nutrition and health status are related to the eating habit, the choice the food has to be accommodated to the changed body composition and altered physiological functions in seniors. They should be aimed for an increasing biological value and decreasing energy density of the foodstuff. The appropriate supplementation with micronutrients such as vitamin D, antioxidant vitamins and some minerals might be recommended to optimize the nutrition status in the population.

Gastroenterology has been among the very rapidly developing fields in recent years. In addition to new technologies extending the options of endoscopic diagnostics, molecular biology-based methods and genetic methods have been increasingly used in diagnosing diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, or pancreas. The new diagnostic options are, of course, reflected in some novel therapeutic approaches.
