Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) predominantly affects the gastrointestinal system but it is associated with a large number of extraintestinal manifestations (EIM). These extraintestinal disorders can significantly contribute to morbidity and impair the overall life quality. The most common extraintestinal disorders associated with IBD include dermatologic, ophthalmologic, musculoskeletal and hepatobiliary diseases, although virtually every organ system may be involved. It is important to acquire knowledge on these extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn‘s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) to start the respective treatment early.

Cardiovascular autonomous neuropathy includes abnormalities in the control of cardiac frequency as well as in central and peripheral vascular dynamics. It afflicts ca 17 % of type 1 diabetic patients and 22 % of type 2 diabetic patients, depending on the method used for the examination. Diabetes mellitus leads to functional and structural changes of the myocardium, even independently of the presence of ischemic disease and hypertension. The finding of systolic and diastolic dysfunctions of the left ventricle, myocardial dilatations and hypertrophy without the presence of macroangiopathy is designated as diabetic cardiomyopathy. Among the causes...

Anticoagulant therapy plays an important role in primary and secondary prevention of brain embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and other sources of cardioembolic strokes. The most commonly used anticoagulant in these indications is warfarin. Warfarin significantly reduces the risk of stroke and death, but increases that of bleeding. Life-threatening intracerebral haemorrhage is the most serious complication of anticoagulant therapy, with a mortality, that can exceed 50 %. New oral direct thrombin inhibitors (dabigatran) and factor Xa inhibitors (rivaroxaban, apixaban) present promising alternatives to warfarin. Dabigatran...

More than 20 millons of EU inhabitants suffer from undernutrition. 30–40 % patients admitted to hospitals are undernourished. Malnutrition is frequently their main reason for hospitalisation and in 2/3 of patients it gets worse during the hospital stay. Undernutrition is caused by starvation. The term starvation is often not understood correctly as insufficient food or nutrition intake. There are multiple reasons for hospital starvation including a professional blindness that leads to focusing on technologies and sophisticated methods more than on simple follow up the food intake and checking patients body weight. A complex treatment...
